Our Story
Our story began with a request from our youngest son to make “real” root beer. We gathered the necessary roots, plants, and bark from the woods and began to do the research into a recipe. One thing led to another and I saw a short video on running a still. At that moment, I was hooked. After ruining a few of my wife’s good cooking pots (don’t worry – she has a new set) we built our first still… the day after we received Federal approval to do so, of course. 😉
Each and every still can be likened to a distillers signature. A lot of emphasis is placed on the mash bill and barrels while virtually nothing about stills is ever discussed! The way the distiller runs his/her still, how the alcohol vapors travel, when/how they come into contact with copper, and even how they are condensed back into alcohol. all effect the taste of the liquor! With this in mind, we have built every piece of equipment used in our distillery ourselves. This allows us to customize our liquor to suit our, and our customer’s, taste. We painstakingly craft each recipe to ensure the resulting spirit is one we would serve at our own table.
Grumpy Goat Distillery takes great pride in knowing that every single item is made from start to finish in our distillery. We do not, and will not, purchase any alcohol from an outside source and slap our label on it. Our mashes are cooked and fermented in the basement of the distillery according to our very own Mash Bills. We then distill our mashes in one of four 50-gallon stills – adhering to the small batch philosophy. Each bottle is filled by hand and inspected before being placed on our shelf.
